The Three Steps

What QPR teaches

QPR is like CPR for suicide prevention. Three simple, powerful steps that anyone can learn — and that research shows can make a real difference when someone is in crisis.

Q
Question

Ask the question directly.

Research shows that asking someone directly about suicide does not increase their risk — it often provides relief. QPR training teaches you how to ask in a way that opens the door rather than closing it.

P
Persuade

Offer hope. Stay present.

A person in crisis often feels hopeless and alone. Persuading someone to seek help means helping them see that things can get better — and that they don’t have to figure this out by themselves.

R
Refer

Connect them to the right help.

Knowing where to send someone — and how to help them get there — is the final step. QPR training provides local and national referral resources so you can act quickly and confidently.

As a Certified QPR Gatekeeper, You Will Learn To

Five skills that can save a life

Certification is valid for one year. All participants must attend the full 90-minute training and keep video on during virtual sessions to receive certification.

👁️

Recognize the warning signs of suicide

Learn the behavioral, verbal, and situational cues that may indicate someone is at risk — including signs that are often overlooked or misunderstood.

🏷️

Understand suicide as a public health issue

Increase your awareness of stigma, dispel common myths, and understand how suicide prevention fits into the larger picture of community mental health.

💛

Know how to offer hope

Learn practical, trauma-informed ways to respond to someone who is struggling — including what to say, what not to say, and how to stay present without overreacting.

📋

Access local and national referral resources

Leave training equipped with a curated set of local and national resources — so that when you need to refer someone, you know exactly where to send them and how.

🆘

Know how to get help and save a life

Walk through real-world scenarios and practice the QPR steps so that when a moment comes, you respond with confidence rather than hesitation.
